Alpine towns hope that heavy snowfalls will bring tourists back and boost business after a quiet 2020 ski season. After a muted pandemic-affected season, the ski season is here. The east Australian cold snap this week has brought a lot of snow. The first snowfall of the year is always a special moment for Cam Barton, who owns Alpine Sports in […]
Winter is a difficult time for many Australians. Yuletide nostalgia inherited from European colonists leads us to do bizarre things like spray fake snow onto our windows during high summer. Since 1980, Australians have been offered “Christmas in Jul” as an antidote for this climate incongruity. But outside of Yulefest, the original festival, the folly proved to be too much to […]
Christine Retschlag is equally at home in the pristine tropical rivers of north Queensland. We stroll through cane and Croc country on our way to a river-drift snorkel in the Daintree, the oldest rainforest in the world. Harrowing? What about the crocodiles that live in the river itself? Artemis, named after the goddess of hunting, assures that this section of Mossman River […]
Naidoc Week, which was born out of the Aboriginal Rights Movement activism, is a week-long national event that celebrates the culture, history, and achievements of Aboriginal peoples and Torres Strait Islander Peoples. The ‘National Aborigines (sic) and Islanders Day Celebration Committee’ used to be responsible for the organization of the Naidoc Week. The acronym is now the official name of the […]
Residents were encouraged to get creative and make decorations for the town. Residents were encouraged to get creative in making decorations for the city to be painted and knitted yellow. Carol Jenkinson explains that a pompom garden was planted in the middle, bunting of yellow and green was used to decorate the shops, and a dam with “little wattle fairies scarecrows.” Eliza, […]
Many Australians are thinking about travel at the moment. This could be as a way to escape from the daily grind or for those who don’t feel trapped at home. Booking a trip interstate or abroad in the coming year is risky, given that states can suddenly impose travel restrictions and fluctuating limits on international arrivals. The trip could be canceled […]
What is the least informative statement people tend to make? I would nominate “I love travel.” This statement tells you little about the person because almost everyone loves to travel. Yet, people say it because they are proud of having traveled and that they plan to do so in the future. The opposition is small but articulate. G. K. Chesterton said that travel […]
From land, I always thought that sailing was best enjoyed. Sydney Harbour is dotted with crisp, white sails. It’s a sight to behold rather than something you should get involved in. Since I chose a journalism career over, for example, owning a gambling establishment, I have assumed that this disqualifies me. If money were not a barrier, then skills would. Sydney to […]
Snorkeling is an inexpensive way to start your adventure. All you need is the right mask, wetsuit, and the place to snorkel. Shelly Beach in Manly is awash with a mist of salty water as clouds roll over. The protected stretch of sand on Sydney’s northern beaches is throbbing with locals despite the grey skies. Damien McClellan of EcoTreasures told our […]
I love the sea, but I haven’t been able to see her for the past two years. Since the world has gotten bigger, I only want to be near the water. Standup paddleboarding, or Sup, is the closest thing you can do to getting wet without actually getting it. You cruise, enjoy the scenery, and find a good spot to have lunch. […]
